Instabilities in the Meridian sun give rise to the unique planetary conditions endured by the small local population. The dimensional shifts can last for up to sixty years at a time, and as a result the population develops only very slowly, and in this phase change the people experience disembodiment. It is a plight they find tenable, even uto-pian, but it curtails any effort to advance their culture and technology.
The Research Facility on Meridian is subject to the same planetary phase-shifts as the planet, and hence can only conduct its research and experiments at intervals. But their results in the meantime will be invaluable.
