Star Trek: Birth of the Federation 2 (BotF2) is a non-commercial, fan developed game. It started long time ago - maybe in 2004, some info at News.

Kenneth wrote in July 30th, 2013 and before:

Kickstarter is a great idea. There is a problem though. As soon as we pay someone to work on the game CBS Paramount will want a cut of money made off their property, Star Trek. We are not sure how to license a game with them that is then still open source and free to all.

Mike decided on free and open source.

We chose not to risk our not for profit status as a fan game.

Mike, the original programer, wished to keep it as low profile as possible. We might get away with paying coders if we then give it away for free but Mike never wanted to push our luck.

addition by reg: BotF2/Supremacy are fan-made. Making it commercial wouldn't be that what the team (consisting of fans, not of business people of games worlds) might be willing to fall into.

same for Steam Greenlight, Desura

Question: What about dropping the trek specific items?

K: A game, Birth of the Empires, also uses the BOTF2 forums. They had been a trek game inspired by Birth of the Federation. They decided to remove all trek content and finish the game. It is a good game but interest in it dropped way off after removal of the Trek. Much of what drives work on Supremacy is a love of the Trek content and a desire to learn the game making skills to help make it happen.

Addition by reg: BotE itself is English or German, depending on language chosen at installation.
